Barbara Byers was elected Executive Vice-President of the Canadian Labour Congress in 2002 after more than a decade as President of the 63,000-member Saskatchewan Federation of Labour.
Ms. Byers is responsible within the CLC for initiatives and programs relating to education, youth, medicare/health care, workplace training and technology, literacy, employment insurance and apprenticeships; and issues of concern to women workers, workers with disabilities and gay, bi-sexual, lesbian and transgendered workers.
Ms. Byers also works with the International Labour Organization, a Geneva-based tripartite body of the United Nations. A social worker by profession, Ms. Byers has traveled the world extensively on behalf of the CLC and is a champion of literacy. Ms. Byers’ strong community roots led her to found the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour Summer Camp for Youth in Saskatchewan and co-found of the Prairie School for Union Women.
